Diaphragm metering pumps - Conveying highly aggressive fluids safely: Hermetically tight plastic pump heads are resistant to mineral acids, aqueous salt solutions and alkalis

Durable, high-performance thermoplastics reduce resource consumption

 

At the end of 2021, LEWA launched the cost-effective and energy-efficient LEWA ecosmart diaphragm metering pump in the LCC version. Initially, the pump heads came in various sizes made from 316L stainless steel. With a pump capacity of up to 1,000 l/h in the low pressure range, the model is suitable for chemical injection in the chemical industry, petrochemicals and industrial and municipal water treatment. However, due to the risk of corrosion, for some fluids stainless steel is suitable only to a limited extent. In 2024, the manufacturer has therefore added hermetically tight pump heads made of particularly durable and long-lasting PVC to the LEWA ecosmart LCC portfolio. They enable even very aggressive fluids to be metered precisely and safely.

 

"Aggressive chemicals such as mineral acids, aqueous salt solutions and alkalis present challenges for metering technology," said Thomas Bökenbrink, Lead Product Manager Pumps at LEWA. "The stainless steels that are otherwise frequently chosen are not an option for the wetted components in this case." After all, the fluids attack this material, causing it to corrode over time. Since these hazardous fluids must not be released into the environment under any circumstances, they require a 100 percent tight and fail-safe pump system. For applications in which additive fluids like sulfuric acid, iron(III) chloride and sodium hypochlorite are metered, LEWA equips the LEWA ecosmart LCC diaphragm metering pump with specially developed pump heads made of PVC. The organic nature of the thermoplastic used makes it resistant to inorganic mineral acids, sodium salts and alkalis.

With the new plastic pump heads, LEWA is expanding the application range of the LEWA ecosmart LCC. The hermetically tight diaphragm metering pump is characterized by its low procurement and operating costs – without sacrificing safety or metering accuracy. As with all components, the manufacturer also ensures that the materials used for the new pump heads are very robust and durable such that the units seldom need to be serviced or even replaced. The typical LEWA DPS diaphragm protection system and the integrated overpressure protection in the hydraulic part reliably protect the pump against any type of operating error or impermissible operating states. "When it comes to plastics in particular, the sustainable use of resources is also becoming an increasingly important factor for users," added Bökenbrink. "With the new PVC pump heads, we are taking this requirement seriously and enabling highly aggressive and hazardous fluids to be metered safely for people and the environment."
